Day Trip vs. Long Weekend

Now that we're travelling to 117 destinations on the Greyhound network, there's more choices than you can poke a stick at. But we've done the hard yakka for you - read on to find out what's better, a day trip or long weekend away.

Short day trip

Sometimes all it takes is a day away from everyday life to recharge the batteries. No need to spend money on accommodation, just chuck a sickie from work and jump on a Greyhound!

We recommend checking out these cracking spots.

Brisbane <> Sunshine Coast (2hr each way)

With brilliant beaches, unspoilt nature, designer shopping, quaint markets and lush hinterland, the Sunshine Coast has become one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations. Spend a fun-filled day at Mooloolaba Beach, hit the shops at Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore, or go bushwalking through gorgeous Noosa National Park.

Of, if you're coming down to the big smoke from the coast, there's plenty of ways to spend a day in Brisbane. Take a stroll through the colourful Roma St Parklands (right next to our coach terminal!), climb the iconic Story Bridge, or relax by the river with a bevvy at newly-opened Howard Smith Wharves.

Canberra <> Sydney (3hr 30min each way)

When you want to visit Australia’s most iconic sights, you need to head to Sydney. This is the place where you can climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, catch a show at the unmistakable Sydney Opera House, and hit the beach at Bondi or Manly.

On the other hand, beautiful Canberra is not our capital city for nothing. Plan a picnic at scenic Lake Burley Griffin, discover the Anzac Spirit at the Australian War Memorial, or explore the myriad of museums and galleries.

Broome <> Derby (2hr 20min each way)

Go for a wander out yonder with a day trip to Derby. Soak up the beauty of the Kimberley region, filled with majestic canyons, idyllic swimming holes and heaps of native wildlife.

Or head for the ocean and watch the sun sink behind the waves from the red-coloured sands of Broome. Ride a camel along the beach, hunt for dinosaur footprints, or take a ride over the Horizontal Falls - described by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the greatest wonders of the natural world"!

Long weekend

Got a bit more time up your sleeve and keen for a proper recharge of the old batteries? A classic Aussie weekender away gives you the best of both worlds - plenty of time to relax, while also packing in some local adventures!

Cairns <> Townsville (5hr 40min each way)

From the tropical rainforests and natural wonders of Cairns, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, to the spectacular, World Heritage-listed national parks and bustling urban centre of Townsville, this is your chance to discover the stunning landscapes and extraordinary beauty of North Queensland.

On your journey between Cairns and Townsville, your Greyhound will also stop at some must-see destinations, including the relaxed and romantic beachside town of Mission Beach, and vibrant Innisfail, home to some of the most impressive art deco buildings in Australia.

Darwin <> Katherine (4hr each way)

Theres no denying everyone should experience the Australian outback at least once in their lifetime!

Darwin is the gateway to the nearby Litchfield National Park, as well as Crocosaurus Cove (home of the infamous Cage of Death). Not your thing? Get in a spot of shopping instead at the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets.

If you choose to spend your weekend in Katherine, you can take a boat ride down the Katherine River and see the stunning Nitmiluk Gorge, or embark on a challenging bushwalk over rocky trails at the idyllic Edith Falls.

Adelaide <> Coober Pedy (11hr 15min each way)

Save on accommodation with an overnight road trip with Greyhound along the Stuart Highway. Adelaide has become one of Australia’s most buzzworthy destinations, with a thriving foodie scene, hidden underground bars, and some of Australia’s biggest cultural events, including Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide and Adelaide Fringe.

Or spend your weekend in one of the most unusual places in Australia, if not the entire world. Coober Pedy is best known as the opal capital of Australia, but there’s much more to do in this unique desert town than just fossicking for gemstones. Underneath its sun-drenched, lunar-like landscape, you’ll find a labyrinth of underground houses, hotels, art galleries and shops that have been tunnelled out of the sandstone surrounds!

So, day trip or long weekend? 🤔

The long and short of it is, whichever one you choose you're bound to feel the heart of Australia.
