Your trip will begin in Rockhampton, best known as the ‘Beef Capital of Australia’ – and with good reason. Popular attractions in this agricultural hub include the ‘Big Bull’ statues that are scattered throughout town, and the legendary Great Western Hotel, where you can eat a delicious steak and watch professional bull riders strut their stuff in an actual rodeo ring on Friday nights.

But there’s more to Rocky than cattle. The area is also home to Mount Archer National Park, with its impressive range of native plants and wildflowers and stunning views of the coast; the Capricorn Caves, an awe-inspiring series of limestone caves; and the Rockhampton Zoo, located within the heritage-listed Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.

As you travel on the bus from Rockhampton to Emerald, you’ll pass through a number of towns on the Capricorn Highway, including Blackwater, a significant coal mining area.

When you arrive in Emerald, you’ll pull into the heritage-listed Railway Station. The elaborate entrance to the station, with wrought iron lacework and pillared portico, is a great photo opportunity – as is the ancient fossilised tree, believed to be over 250 million years old, that stands outside Emerald Town Hall.

Other must-dos in Emerald include the Fairbairn Dam, which maintains a perfect water level for swimming, water skiing and fishing; the Emerald Botanic Gardens, with its own tropical forest, rose garden and hedge maze; and the Big Easel – the largest painting in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s a reproduction of a Van Gogh sunflower painting that stands 25m (82ft) tall.
